Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need a VSC every year?
A: No, you don’t! Once SMBA has approved a valid VSC, screening and lower level of checks can be accepted going forward, so long as you certify nothing has changed.

Q: I have a VSC from another organization/work, do you need one specific to SMBA?
A: No, we don’t! As long as your VSC is within the guidelines provided (3 years for 2026 submissions), we can accept valid VSC searches that were prepared for another organization.

Q: How do I get an “Agency Letter” to get a new Criminal Record Check or VSC?
A: All coaches and volunteers must complete the appropriate application form to capture the information needed. Once the application process has been completed, you will receive the required documentation or direction from SMBA.

Q: Will SMBA pay for my record search?
A: Yes, as long as the search is completed at the minimum level required for the role(s) you are applying for. Please email us to inquire about reimbursement for your search.
