Development Program

Development Philosophy

Research consistently demonstrates that young athletes achieve the best long-term outcomes when individual practice is complemented by structured development opportunities. These programs provide meaningful repetitions, game-based learning experiences, teamwork, and coaching support that help players build both technical skills and confidence.

At the early stages of development, the primary objective is not to identify the strongest players, but rather to provide all participants with a strong foundation of fundamental skills, game understanding, and enjoyment of the sport. Studies have shown that an excessive focus on competition, specialization, and short-term results at a young age can limit long-term athletic development and participation.

When development opportunities are provided to all players, the benefits extend beyond the individual athlete. A larger number of skilled and confident players strengthens the overall quality of teams, increases competitiveness throughout the organization, and contributes to a healthier and more sustainable baseball program.

This philosophy is reflected in the structure of our player development model. At the 9U level, all players participate in division-wide development activities designed to ensure every child receives consistent instruction, quality repetitions, and exposure to proper baseball fundamentals from the beginning of their playing experience.

As players progress to the 11U and 13U divisions, additional specialized clinics are offered for those who wish to further advance their skills and commitment to the sport. This approach provides motivated athletes with opportunities for enhanced development while continuing to support players who prefer to participate and enjoy baseball at a recreational pace.

By establishing strong fundamentals early and providing progressive development opportunities as players grow, we create an environment that supports both individual success in the moment and long-term athletic development for the future.

9U Development Program

Purpose and Structure

The 9U Development Program is designed to prioritize player growth through increased repetitions and game-like learning opportunities. Players must learn positioning, decision-making, communication, teamwork, and situational awareness. These concepts are difficult to develop through individual practice alone and are best learned through structured group activities and games. While traditional games are often measured by innings played and scores, development game success is best measured by the number of meaningful opportunities players have to practice skills and make decisions.

Our 9U schedule includes development games at the start of the season to help the teams build a healthy foundation from the start of the season. Then the schedule moves into traditional competitive games to be able to put these skills to use and continue to learn from real game environments.

More Offensive Opportunities

In traditional games, players at the top of the lineup typically receive more at-bats than those at the bottom. The Development Game format ensures every player receives approximately the same number of offensive opportunities, allowing all players to practice hitting, base running, and game awareness regardless of lineup position.

More Defensive Opportunities

Rather than innings ending quickly after three outs, Development Games allow every batter to hit, creating significantly more defensive situations. This keeps players engaged and provides additional opportunities to field, throw, communicate, and react to game situations.

More Base Running Experience

Base running is one of the most important yet underdeveloped skills in youth baseball. Development Games intentionally create situations that allow players to learn concepts such as force plays, tagging up, and reading fly balls. These experiences help players build confidence and understanding before encountering the same situations in competitive games.

A Hybrid of Practice and Competition

Development Games combine elements of both practices and games. Because the focus is on learning rather than scorekeeping, coaches can reinforce skills, review responsibilities, create additional fielding opportunities, and teach situational baseball in a game environment. For many teams, these sessions provide some of the most valuable development opportunities of the season.

Measuring Success Differently

The success of a Development Game is not determined by the score. Instead, it is measured by whether players received more repetitions, experienced more game situations, learned new skills, and gained opportunities they might not have received in a traditional game format.

Building a Foundation for Competitive Play

The Development Game format is used during the early part of the season when player development is most critical. The remainder of the season returns to a traditional competitive format, including regular-season games, mid-season tournaments and playoffs. By focusing on learning, exposure, and repetition early, players are better prepared to compete later in the season.

Supporting Coaches

The program also recognizes that volunteer coaches have varying levels of baseball and teaching experience. Ongoing support, education, and resources are provided to help coaches maximize development opportunities and create the best possible experience for every player.
