18U BLACK SOX WIN SABL LEAGUE PENNANT

Wednesday night at IDA Park Guzzo Electrical 18U Black Sox split a doubleheader with the visiting Northern Michigan Patriots which clinched the SABL (Superior Algoma Baseball) pennant. The opening game saw the Sox come out on the short end of a 16-2 score. Kolton Tremblay took the loss going 3 1/3, allowing four runs on one hit, striking seven while walking five. Ty Turco had a double, single and one run batted in.

 

Needing a victory to secure first place it all came down to game two. The Sox jumped out to an early lead by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning, one in the second and one more in the sixth. The Patriots kept chipping away at the deficit by scoring once in the third, once in the fifth and two more in the seventh to make for an exciting finish. Ty Turco earned the win, pitching a complete game, scattering eight hits, allowing two earned runs, striking out five and walking one. The offence was led by Lucas Diberardino with a double and single while Hunter Thorkilson added two singles, stole two bases and had an RBI. Thomas Keough and Ty Turco each had a double for the Sox.

 

The SABL season wraps up today with a DH between the Northern Michigan Patriots and the Gaylord Baseball Club. With last night’s victory neither team can catch the Black Sox for first place. This marks the second season for the SABL with the Gaylord Baseball Club winning the pennant in year one.

 

With the doubleheader split Guzzo Electrical 18U Black Sox sit with a record of 26-27-1.

The Black Sox will wrap up their season when they travel to Stratford Aug. 15 -17 to compete in the 15 team 18U Provincial ‘A’ Championship Tournament.
