11U Black Sox bring Home SOBA title in Hamilton
Over the Labour Day weekend, the 11U Soo Black Sox travelled to Hamilton for the OBA Dedicated Select Championships. They came home undefeated champions!
The team hit the field on Friday afternoon to open the tournament against the Halton Hills Eagles. The Soo came out swinging with 4 runs scored in both the first and second inning. Lincoln Rennison drove in four runs on two hits, and RBI singles by Charlie Truman and Reid Boissoneau helped lead the Soo to a 12-1 win after 4.5 innings. Reece Hunter earned the convincing win for the Soo with strong catching from Jax Palahnuk.
In the second game, the Soo faced off against the Mississauga North Tigers who would come out scoring 4 runs in the top of the first inning. The Soo answered back scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the second and scoring 4 more in the bottom of the 2ndinning, holding the Tigers to a score of 7-6 after two. The Soo defensively would go on to hold the Tigers to 0 runs in the third and fourth innings, while scoring six more runs. Charlie Turman drove in 5 of those runs on 3 hits to lead the Soo to a 13-10 win after 4.5 innings.
The Soo was granted the bye on Saturday and faced the Vaughn Vikings in game three on Saturday afternoon. After 4 innings the Soo was winning by a score of 3-1 as the defense on both teams was tight. The bats came out for the Soo in the 5th and 6th innings as they scored 7 runs combined, while shutting downVaughn to 0 runs in both innings. They would sail away with a 10 -1 win after 6 innings with a score of 10-1. Charlie Truman earned the win for the Sox with strong catching efforts by Reece Hunter.
As the final four teams remained on Sunday morning, the Soo would see their northern rivals, the North Bay Panthers in a must win for the Panthers in the double elimination tournament. Charlie Truman, Jax Palahnuk, and Reece hunter each collected two hits for the Sox, securing the 11-2 win after 5.5 innings. JaxPalahnuk earned the win for the Sox with relief from Reid Entwistle, and strong hits from Reid Boissoneau.
In the final game, the Soo met up with Vaughn for the second time that weekend, and after handing Vaughn their first loss of the season, the Soo shut down Vaughn in the top of the first and went on to score 3. Both teams did not score a run in the second inning, and the Soo would hold Vaughn to zero runs in the top of the third, while driving in 4 runs. After 4 innings the Soo was up 8 to 0 with big bats from Lincoln Rennison, Reid Boissoneau, Jax Palahnuk, Reid Keating and Charlie Truman. The Sox thenscored 2 more runs in the 5th inning to secure the mercy win by a score of 10-0. Thomas Hirvi earned the win for the Sox in an exciting OBA championship win to finish the season strong.
“The coaching staff could not be prouder of how the boys performed on the weekend. They kept their focus all tournament long, on the field and in the dugout. They played with confidence and intensity, picking each other up all weekend. We won as a team. It was truly amazing to watch”, said head coach, Jeff Rennison as he reflected on the championship win.
