18U BLACK SOX LOSE IN FINALS OF MVB STATE TOURNAMENT

GAYLORD, MI

 

Over the weekend Guzzo Electrical 18U Black Sox were in Gaylord, MI to participate in the seven team double elimination MVB (Michigan Veterans Baseball) State Tournament. The Black Sox opened the tournament on Thursday with a victory by defeating the EUP Wood Ducks 7-2. The Sox scored 5 times in the bottom of the second inning with Kolton Tremblay driving in two runs with a double, one of three hits in the game for him. Tremblay picked up the win with 2 1/3 innings of work allowing zero runs, no hits, walking two while striking out six Wood Duck batters.

 

Next up was a game versus the Marquette Blues who had also won their first game 15-0 over Ironwood. The Blues blanked the Black Sox 7-0 with three Marquette pitchers combining to strike out 14 while surrendering one hit, a single by Logan Rohe. Ty Turco took the loss with 5 innings of work, giving up seven hits, striking out four batters while walking one.

 

The loss dropped the Sox into the loser’s bracket to face the Saginaw Blue Jays. The Black Sox bounced back with a 5-1 victory. Ryan Oliver pitched a complete game, scattering six hits, striking out one and walking none. Chase Cerasuolo led the offence with a pair of singles.

 

Saturday at 10:00 AM saw the Black Sox face the EUP Wood Ducks again, this time in an elimination game. The Sox defeated EUP 9-4. The Sox broke the game wide open by scoring six runs. Kolton Tremblay worked four innings, allowing four hits, striking out eight and walking six. Tremblay and Lucas Carriere paced the offence with two hits each.

 

The Sox then had a 12:00 game against the Marquette Blues again who had lost to the Gaylord Baseball club 14-8 on Friday. This time the Sox were able to gain some revenge by defeating the Blues 7-2. Starting pitcher Hunter Thorkilsonhad an outstanding game, going 

5 2/3 allowing but two hits, zero runs while string out four and walking five. Kolton Tremblay paced the offence with three hits, including a monstrous home run to left field. Ty Turco chipped in with a single and a double.

 

The victory put them into their third game of the day against the undefeated Gaylord Baseball Club in the Championship game. The game was 2-0 for GBC until the sixth inning when they broke the game open by scoring four runs. Lucas Carriere took the loss going 5 1/3 giving up six hits, striking out two and walking none. Owen James had a pair of singles to lead the Black Sox.

 

The Black Sox record improves to 25-26-1.

Next action for Guzzo Electrical Black Sox is this coming weekend when they travel to Thunder Bay for a four game series with the Thunder Bay Lakers.
